Why fall prevention starts with your spine

Why fall prevention starts with your spine

Balance gets all the credit. Your legs, hips and core do most of the work.

Most fall prevention advice starts with your feet. However, it is all a synergistic coordinated movement that does not rely on simply one muscle group. When your back moves well, your core reacts fast and your hips are able to stabilize, then your body catches a stumble before it turns into a fall. Keep that system loose and responsive and you give yourself a wider margin every time you move.

Move every hour

Sitting stiffens the muscles that keep you upright. Stand up, walk a lap, and stretch for a minute once an hour. It keeps your spine mobile and your reflexes awake.

Stand on one foot

Practice balance while you brush your teeth. One foot down, a counter nearby to grab. Thirty seconds a side trains the quick corrections that stop a fall.

Build a little strength

Strong legs, hips, and core give your body more to work with when it needs to react. You do not need a gym. Sit-to-stands from a chair and a few wall pushups count.

Loosen a stiff back

A back that does not move cannot catch you. Gentle daily movement, a short walk, and easy stretching keep the stumble reflex fast instead of slow.

How long before this helps?

Most people feel steadier within a few weeks of moving more and practicing balance. It builds from there.

When should I see someone in person?

See a professional in person if any of these apply:

Is walking enough on its own?

Walking is a great start. Adding balance practice and a little strength work protects you noticeably more than walking alone. Progressing to single leg work can really teach your body to balance.

Can better posture really lower my risk?

It helps. Standing and moving in balance puts your body in a better spot to react. Pair it with movement and strength for the real gain.
