Why your neck aches by Friday

Monday it is fine. By Friday it is not. Nothing happened, and that is the point.
Holding your head forward is a small load that never gets put down. Five days of it adds up, which is why Friday feels different from Monday.
Screen to eye level
Raise the monitor so your chin stays back.
Chin tucks
Five slow tucks, twice a day. Small movement, not a stretch.
Change position hourly
Standing, walking, or just looking up for a minute.
How long does it usually last?
Most desk-related neck ache settles within a few days once the position changes and the week breaks. If it is still there after two weeks, or it comes back every week, that is worth having looked at.
When should you see someone?
- Pain that lasts more than two weeks
- Pain that wakes you at night
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or hand
- Headaches that are new or getting worse
- Neck pain that started after a fall or a car accident
Any of these are worth an in-person evaluation rather than waiting it out.
How do you keep it from coming back?
- Set the top of the screen at or just below eye level
- Move every hour, even briefly, rather than one long break
- Keep the phone up rather than looking down at your lap
- Keep the shoulders and upper back moving with light, regular exercise
Why does my neck hurt more at the end of the week?
The load is small but constant, and it builds across consecutive days. One night is usually enough to recover from one day. It is often not enough after five.
How long does desk-related neck pain last?
Most cases ease within a few days once the screen position changes and the week breaks. Beyond two weeks, or returning every week, is worth an in-person look.
Is it my pillow or my desk?
If it is worst by Friday afternoon and better by Monday morning, the pattern points at the workweek rather than sleep.
When should I see someone about neck pain?
If it lasts more than two weeks, wakes you at night, comes with numbness or weakness in an arm, or followed a fall or collision.
