A campus is a walking job you did not sign up for
A campus is a walking job. Buildings are far apart, the schedule does not care, and most people cover a serious daily distance without ever calling it exercise. The walking is the healthy part. The bag is not.
One shoulder is the whole problem
A loaded bag on one shoulder makes that shoulder ride high, drops the other, and puts a small bend into your spine to keep you level. Do that across a campus, several times a day, for a semester, and your body stops treating it as carrying something and starts treating it as your posture.
The tell is noticing it when the bag is off. Standing in a queue, one shoulder living higher than the other.
- Both straps. It is unfashionable and it is the entire fix.
- If it is one strap, swap sides at every building, not once a day.
- Pack the heavy things closest to your back rather than at the outside of the bag.
Long sits between long walks
The pattern is a fast walk, then ninety minutes still in a lecture seat, then a fast walk again. The walk is fine. The still ninety minutes with a bag under your feet and a laptop at the wrong angle is where the neck gets involved.
Get the screen up. A stack of books under a laptop is a legitimate solution.
Hills and winter
Ice adds a stabilising workload to every step, and a loaded bag makes each slip a bigger correction. It is why the same walk feels harder in February.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Aching shoulders after a heavy week are ordinary. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: neck pain present when you wake up, pain that travels into an arm, numbness or tingling in the fingers, or headaches that start at the base of the skull.
