Twelve hour shifts and a drive that is part of the shift
Advanced manufacturing anchors the Evansville region, and a good deal of the work happens on long shifts at plants that people drive out to rather than walk to. That combination, a physically demanding shift wrapped in a real commute, is its own thing.
The shift
Repetitive work is defined by its interval rather than its weight. The same modest movement, on a fixed cycle, for ten or twelve hours, with no pause where your body would normally reset. That is why the ache turns up somewhere you were barely using.
- Change your feet rather than your hands. Shift stance, swap which leg takes more.
- Break time is for the opposite motion, and for arms down if you work overhead.
- Rotate through stations where the job allows. Variety is genuinely protective.
The drive is part of the shift
An hour in a seat straight after a physical shift is not recovery. It is one position, no movement, slight vibration, hips locked at the same angle the whole way, on a body that has already done a day.
Two minutes walking the lot before you get in the car does more than it sounds like it should. Set the seat so you are not reaching. On a bad day, stopping once to stand for sixty seconds is worth more than getting home four minutes earlier.
Twelve hours changes the maths
A twelve hour shift is not a ten hour shift with two more hours. The last two are done on a body whose technique has already degraded, and that is where the awkward loading happens.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Soreness that clears over a weekend is the job. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain still present on Monday before the shift, anything travelling down an arm or leg, numbness or tingling, or a grip that has started dropping things.
