A campus walk in an Indiana winter is a stabilising workload

๐ŸŽ’

A university town is a walking town whether anyone plans it or not. Buildings are far apart, the timetable does not care, and most people cover real daily distance with a loaded bag on one shoulder. Then winter arrives and adds a stabilising demand to every single step.

One shoulder is the problem

A bag on one shoulder makes it ride high, drops the other, and puts a small bend in your spine to keep you level. Across a semester your body stops treating that as carrying something and starts treating it as your posture.

The tell is noticing it with the bag off. One shoulder living higher than the other.

Ice is a workload

Every step on ice includes a small correction, and those corrections come from your hips and lower back. A walk that is easy in September is genuinely harder in January, and the difference is not fitness.

Shorter steps, feet more underneath you, and hands out of pockets so you can actually catch yourself.

The long sit in the middle

Fast cold walk, ninety minutes still in a lecture seat, fast cold walk again. The stillness in the middle with a laptop at the wrong height is where the neck joins in. Raise the screen.

When it is worth talking to somebody

Aching shoulders after a heavy week are ordinary. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: neck pain present when you wake up, pain travelling into an arm, numbness or tingling in the fingers, or a slip on ice that still hurts several days later.

If you went down on an outstretched hand or your tailbone, get it looked at.
