Shift work, then a drive, then not much sleep
Manufacturing anchors a lot of working life in Vigo County, and much of it runs on shifts. The shift itself is only part of the physical day. What happens either side of it decides how your back feels by Thursday.
The interval is the load, not the weight
Repetitive work is defined by its cycle. The same modest movement, at the same angle, on a fixed interval, for a whole shift, with no pause where your body would normally reset. That is why the ache turns up somewhere you were barely using.
- Change your feet rather than your hands. Shift stance, put weight on the other leg.
- Use the break for the opposite motion, and for arms down if you work overhead.
- Rotate stations where the job allows. Variety is genuinely protective.
The drive is the second shift
Going straight from a physical shift into a seat is not recovery, it is a quieter version of the same problem: one position, no movement, hips locked, some vibration.
Walk the lot for two minutes before you get in. Set the seat so you are not reaching. Stopping once to stand up beats getting home four minutes sooner.
Nights
Doing physical work at the hours your body expects to be repairing genuinely hurts more, and short daytime sleep does not undo it. Protect the sleep window. It is the least satisfying advice here and the one that matters.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Soreness that clears over a weekend is the job. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain still present on Monday before the shift starts, anything travelling down an arm or leg, numbness or tingling, or a grip that has started dropping things.
