Cave country is a lot of stairs and stooping
South central Kentucky sits on top of one of the most caved landscapes in the world, and a lot of local weekends happen underground or on the trails above. It is a great way to spend a Saturday and it is not a walk on the flat, whatever the map says.
Stooping is a held position, not a movement
Cave passages make you duck, and ducking for thirty seconds is nothing. Ducking repeatedly across an hour, with your head up so you can still see, is a sustained demand on your neck and upper back that has no equivalent above ground.
The tell is a neck that is fine underground and complains that evening.
- Bend at the hips and knees rather than folding your upper back. It is more tiring and it is the right tired.
- Look with your eyes more and your neck less where you can.
- Straighten up properly whenever the ceiling allows rather than staying folded because it is easier.
Steps, and lots of them
Cave access usually means long stairways, and coming back up at the end of a tour is where tired legs and a stumble meet. Down is where the control is needed, up is where the effort is.
Damp and cold
Underground is cold and damp year round. Muscles that have cooled are less forgiving of an awkward position, and the awkward positions are the whole activity. Move properly before you go in.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Neck and leg soreness that fades in a couple of days is expected. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: neck pain present when you wake, anything travelling down an arm, numbness or tingling, or a knee that is still unhappy days after the steps.
