Two days on Broadway in boots you bought on Friday
Nashville gets a particular kind of weekend. Land Friday afternoon, buy cowboy boots at some point in the first two hours, then be upright on Lower Broadway until Sunday. Nobody plans this as a physical event. It absolutely is one.
The Sunday version of this person is very easy to spot at the airport.
New boots have no break in, and Broadway is longer than it looks
A boot bought on Friday has never been worn. There is no give at the ankle, the sole is stiff, and the heel changes the angle of everything above it. That is a completely different walking mechanic from whatever you own at home, and you are debuting it on a weekend where you will cover more ground on foot than you probably do in a normal week.
Broadway looks short from one end. It is not, once you have gone up and down it eleven times looking for the group that moved on without texting.
None of this means wearing different shoes.
- Wear them around the house before the trip. Even a couple of hours. That is the whole trick and almost nobody does it.
- Bring one flat pair and actually use them for the walking parts, not just as a Sunday morning surrender.
- Sit down on purpose once an hour, even briefly. The problem is not the standing. It is standing for nine hours with no interruption.
The pedal tavern is a workout
It is a bicycle. It is a bicycle with a bar attached, at an awkward seat height, that you pedal for an hour while turned sideways to talk to people. Your legs will mention it later, and so will your lower back, because sitting rotated on a bike seat is a strange thing to ask of a spine that spent last week at a desk.
Face forward sometimes. Adjust the seat if you can. That is the advice.
Sunday
The classic mistake is a full day of sitting still. Brunch, then the airport, then a flight, then a car. Twelve hours in one position straight after two days of the opposite.
Walk before you fly. Stand up on the plane once. If your lower back is talking on Sunday it is usually not injured, it is stiff and asking to be moved, and gentle movement helps more than a heat pack and a long sit.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Two days of soreness that fades by midweek is exactly what should happen. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain that is sharp rather than stiff, anything travelling down a leg, a rolled ankle still swollen after a few days, or anything not improving at all by the end of the week.
Also worth saying plainly, because it comes up on these weekends. If you actually fell, get it looked at, even if it was funny at the time.
