Nashville ยท Guide
Nashville is hillier than the race photos make it look
Nashville is hillier than the race photos make it look, and the St. Jude Rock 'n' Roll Nashville runs the weekend of April 24 and 25, 2027. If you have been training on flat ground, the course is going to tell you something about your legs that you did not ask to know.
Here is the part people underestimate. The route goes through downtown, past the honky-tonks on Broadway, across the Cumberland, through Music Row, past the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and finishes at Nissan Stadium. On a map that reads as a tour of the city. In your quads it reads as a series of climbs, and the ones around Music Row and Belmont arrive in the middle, which is exactly when you have stopped feeling fresh and have not yet started counting down.
Rolling is a different job than long
Flat distance training teaches your body one thing: keep going. A rolling course asks for something else. Every climb is a short effort at a higher intensity, and every descent asks your quads to absorb load rather than produce it. That second part is what people miss. Running downhill is braking, over and over, for miles.
The soreness that shows up two days after a hilly race is usually not the climbs. It is the descents.
What to change while there is still time
- Put hills in the middle of a run, not at the start. The course does.
- Practise running down them at race effort rather than jogging down them recovering. Your quads need the rehearsal more than your lungs do.
- Do at least a couple of long runs on a route that rolls continuously rather than one big climb. Nashville does not give you one hill. It gives you many.
The week after
Most people plan the race and do not plan the recovery, then spend the following Tuesday walking down stairs sideways. A few things help more than they sound like they should.
Keep moving on the day after. Not running, just walking. Sitting completely still is what makes the second day worse than the first. Your hips have been locked into one repetitive pattern for hours and they respond better to gentle movement than to a couch.
Expect the worst day to be day two rather than day one. That is normal and it is not a sign anything went wrong.
Go back to easy running when easy running feels easy, not on a date you picked in advance.
When it is worth talking to somebody
General soreness that improves a little every day is the ordinary story. Worth getting looked at by a qualified provider: pain that is sharp rather than achy, pain clearly on one side only that is not improving after a week, anything that changes how you walk, or any numbness or tingling.
None of that is a diagnosis. It is the short list of things worth a conversation rather than another week of waiting to see.
