Six months indoors changes how you sit
A long grey winter on the lake means months where the incidental movement quietly disappears. You do not walk to lunch, you do not take the long way, and the evening walk stops happening. Nothing about your job changed, but your daily movement halved, and by February a lot of people find their back is worse without being able to point to a cause.
The thing that changed is not your chair
People blame the desk, but the desk was there in July. What changed is everything around it. In summer the same eight hours of sitting was broken up by movement that did not feel like exercise. In winter the sitting is continuous.
- Put the movement back deliberately, because it will not return on its own. A short walk at a fixed time beats a good intention.
- Stand up on a schedule rather than when you notice you are stiff. By the time you notice, you have been still too long.
- Indoor stairs count. A few flights, a few times a day, is real.
Cold and tension
Cold makes people pull inward, shoulders up and forward, and that posture follows you back inside for a while. If your upper back is worse in winter, some of it is genuinely the weather rather than the work.
The weekend catch up
The classic pattern is five sedentary days and one big Saturday. That mismatch is where the weekend injuries come from. A little every day beats a lot once.
When it is worth talking to somebody
Stiffness that eases once you move is ordinary. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain present when you wake before anything has happened, pain travelling into an arm or leg, numbness or tingling, or a back that has started to feel unreliable when you twist.
