A campus this size is a walking commute with a bag on it

๐ŸŽ’

Ohio State runs one of the largest single campuses in the country, and crossing it is not a stroll between buildings. People cover a serious daily distance here without ever calling it exercise, usually with a loaded bag, usually against a timetable that does not care how far apart the buildings are.

The walking is the good part. The bag is not.

One shoulder is the whole problem

A loaded bag on one shoulder makes that shoulder ride high, drops the other, and puts a small bend into your spine to keep you level. Do that across a campus this size, several times a day, for a semester, and your body stops treating it as carrying something and starts treating it as your posture.

The tell is noticing it when the bag is off. One shoulder living higher than the other while you stand in a queue.

Long sits between long walks

Fast walk, ninety minutes still in a lecture seat, fast walk again. The stillness in the middle, with a bag under your feet and a laptop at the wrong height, is where the neck gets involved. Raise the screen. A stack of books works.

Winter

Ice adds a stabilising demand to every step, and a loaded bag turns each small slip into a larger correction. That is why the same walk is harder in February.

When it is worth talking to somebody

Aching shoulders after a heavy week are ordinary. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: neck pain present when you wake up, pain travelling into an arm, numbness or tingling in the fingers, or headaches that start at the base of the skull.
