Clarksville ยท Guide

A 35 pound ruck for 12 miles is a spine problem before it is a fitness one

๐ŸŽ’

Fort Campbell sits on the state line between Clarksville and Hopkinsville, home of the 101st, the Army's only Air Assault Division. Air Assault School finishes with a twelve mile ruck carrying a thirty five pound rucksack in under three hours. Units run twenty kilometre rucks as certification events. A lot of people in this town have done that, and a lot are doing it again next month.

Rucking is not walking with a bag. It is a different load path and it does something specific to a back.

Weight on your back changes where you carry your body

A loaded ruck sits behind your centre of mass, so your body leans forward to compensate. That forward lean is what lets you move at pace under load, and it is also a sustained demand on your lower back and hips that does not stop for three hours.

The people who have trouble are rarely the ones who cannot handle the weight. They are the ones whose lean got worse as they got tired.

The last two miles are a different event

Technique degrades with fatigue, and the last stretch is where most of the awkward loading happens. That is also when people speed up to make time. Both at once is the combination worth respecting.

Boots, feet and everything above them

Feet change how everything above them moves. A hot spot you are compensating around for eight miles becomes a hip that is doing something unusual, which becomes a lower back that is unhappy the next day. Sort the feet early.

When it is worth talking to somebody

Soreness that clears in a couple of days is the training. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain that is sharp rather than achy, anything that travels down a leg, numbness or tingling, a foot that slaps or drags, or pain that is present before the ruck rather than after it.

None of this is medical advice or a substitute for your unit's medical channels.
