Line work is repetition, and repetition is the whole problem

🏭

Jackson is a manufacturing town, and among other things it builds engine components for vehicles assembled right across North America. Line work has a very specific physical signature, and it is almost never about how heavy anything is.

Cycle time is the load

The same modest movement, at the same angle, on a fixed interval, for eight or ten hours. A motion that is harmless once is something else entirely at several hundred repetitions, because you never get the pause where your body would otherwise reset.

That is why the soreness often shows up somewhere you were barely using. Your body borrows from wherever it can to keep the pattern going.

Standing on concrete

A shift spent standing still on a hard floor is harder on a back than a shift spent walking. Muscles that hold you upright never get a turn off. Move your feet deliberately, and use a rail or a low step to raise one foot if there is one.

Nights

Physical work at the hours your body expects to be repairing itself genuinely hurts more, and short daytime sleep does not undo it. Protecting the sleep window is the least satisfying advice here and the one that matters most.

When it is worth talking to somebody

Soreness that clears over a weekend is the job. Worth a conversation with a qualified provider: pain still there on Monday before the shift starts, anything travelling down an arm or leg, numbness or tingling, or weakness in a hand or foot.
